Pierced and Etched Ceramics
by Matt Repsher, USA

Matt Repsher’s work is driven by linear precision and rhythmic patterns delicately hand-etched into leather hard clay. His perfectly etched lines of varying depth and width are either filled with colored slip or etched into it to reveal the natural clay body color below, creating bold and graphic contrasts.

Matt’s elaborate and dynamic patterns are both mesmerizing and compelling for their fine detail. The artist attributes his original inspiration to the concentric lines of the racetracks he grew up around and was fascinated with. From prosaic origins comes poetic beauty and a metaphor for life; the artist creates his path and enjoys being in the groove of it.

The 'Fish Plate" mirror series were inspired by the Hellenistic Greek form of the same name, only substituting the small central sauce well for a mirror. The deep form projects out from the wall by several inches, enhancing the dimensional, sculptural qualities of the shape and allowing for additional patterning visible when seen from the side. Matt's Fish Plates are exclusive to Culture Object.
